Tinsel Time with Boughs & Berries for a Versatile Christmas

What a Weekend!
If you have been following my blog fairly regularly, you will remember my postings that were talking about one of my Geriatric West Highland White Terriers, as he had Radiotherapy for a rare cancer of his sinus cavities on the right side of his head. Well, he got through his treatment really well, and had his repeat CT Scan (9 weeks after completing treatment) and the news was not as good as we would have liked, but not bad either. There was no worsening and no improvement of the cancer, but the cancer has been 'sterilised' putting him into remission for a short while. We know that the cancer will regrow, and then we will have to make the decision to give him eternal peace.

Well, Friday evening, it became obvious that he was not feeling well. He seemed to have a temperature, (40 degrees) and wasn't interested in eating much. Yesterday morning, it was clear he was feeling very unwell. So a mad dash to the Vet, and we were completely shaken and unprepared to be given the option to euthanize him. We felt like the bottom of our world had dropped out from beneath us!
In the end, we decided against getting him admitted to the hospital, and he was given an injection of antibiotics, his analgesia was increased and he bloods taken, and came home with us.

After a very restless night, worrying about Hamish, we went back to the vets this-morning, and my first question to her was "are we doing the right thing?"
For the moment, the answer is YES .... as his temperature was back to normal, and apart from a raised White Blood Cell Count, his bloods were normal.
He has eaten some poached chicken, and is sleeping peacefully. Fingers crossed this is just an unrelated blip and probably an infection picked up when he went to the Oncology Hospital in the week for his scan.

And my ramblings, are to explain why I have been very quiet over the past few days!
We know we will be lucky if Hamish is still with us at Christmas, but for the moment, he is still too full of life to make the decision we really don't want to make, but know it is coming.

I know some poeple won't understand because Hamish is just a Dog ... but he is so much more than that. He has been my companion through some tough times over the past 11 years, and he is as much a part of our family, as our 2 legged family members!

Enough of that now ....
